1986-’87 | Re-introductions

The Post-Crisis Universe

Context

"Post-Crisis" describes the DC continuity that was established through the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event in 1986. The Crisis concluded with the entire DC Universe resetting and being rebooted to a clean slate. Most new readers will want to start right after this point.

Re-establishing Robin

Story

These issues tell how Dick Grayson was fired from his position as Batman's sidekick Robin and how Jason Todd, a street kid, would come to be Dick's successor. Also telling Jason's first encounter with Two-Face.

Context

Many months after the rebooting of the universe had already taken effect, Jason Todd's origin was retold for the new continuity. Since Jason still appeared in the issues between the reboot and this re-told origin, I recommend reading these issues first.

Legends Crossover Event

Story

As Darkseid manipulates Earth's perception of heroes, a new generation rises--including the Suicide Squad and the modern Justice League. But before they can take their place at the front line of Earth’s defenders, they must first confront Darkseid and somehow counter his insidious plan to eradicate the very concept of heroism from the world!

Context

The Legends event sets up a lot of DC Universe big-shots like the Suicide Squad and new Justice League. To Batman's story the event is less integral. The 2 Batman tie-ins to the crossover take place before the miniseries starts and also work as standalone stories without the larger event.
